Susan Hiller.
In most of Susan Hiller’s work she has this obsession with the unknown, she’s also a scientist as well so I think that the relationship between art and science in her eye’s works really well. She’s not just inspired by modern art but she also has a beautiful outlook out life you can tell by most of her work, she creates a lot of mystery in her work, she links science and the unknown into one category which I think is very beautiful, it gives people hope in to the unknown, like the wishing well bottles, this extremely comforted me I think she wanted to make people feel good in her work, the beautiful aura pieces that she photographed was amazing, the relationship between the unknown, colour and personality. Another great example of this was the UFO piece, again she being a scientist and representing hope in her work of the unknown and mystery works really well. What I also like about Susan Hiller’s work is the fact that most of it is atmospheric, its almost like performance art in a way, but her general style of it is really pleasing to the eye, she’s inspired by a lot of Red Indian folk stories and missing languages and the way she presents them the color constructions the sounds it makes you feel very peaceful. I think in real person she would have been a very caring and loving person, she takes things that people are interested in as well like UFO’s and social worries like the punch and Judy piece she works to peoples needs which I think an artist really needs to do, you have to remember you can’t just be selfish and work to your accord you have to be able to please society to be successful, it made me think about my future with art because of this reason, every artist and person needs to make money to setting pieces of art for peoples needs has to be set and acquired.
I was quiet surprised at the class actually I watched the ‘an entertainment’ video around 4-5 times, and when I came out everyone including the tutors had gone home, I was still trying to take in all this beautiful work, she gives people hope and that’s not just art but its really something special, I definitely rate her well I have the most highest respect for this artist now after seeing her work, I’ll be following her work very closely now.
I don’t have a favorite nor a least favorite of her work, but she’s heavily inspired me, my biggest downfall in my work is its all expressional but now I’ve now I’ve seen Hillers work I think I can turn my downfall of being over emotional to a positive thing, I too agree with most of her views, the ‘an entertainment’ image and sound I completely agree with, I don’t think children should be shown a lot of violence when they’re young, its very interesting that she’s taken her opinion and expressed it through this piece of work.
I have a lot of opinions on the world, its annoying living in a fantasy world but now I’ve seen Hiller’s work its boosted my confidence and the fact she hasn’t stuck to one media is really something great. I always try and justify some of my work and a lot of people don’t see some my art work as art, but now seeing this I think I should just keep going with me work, I shouldn’t tell myself that something’s wrong with my design work because faith is all I need to achieve the things I want too. I’m also a musician so combing all elements of my modeling work, music and visual art I can achieve something great. I should have a wide variation of style, this women has given me huge amounts of faith.
Now I’ve looked at Hiller, I’ve decided to make a project named the innocence of sleep. I’m going to record myself sleeping, draw picture, document my sleeping pattern and drawing outcomes of my dreams an artistic experiment of sleep. This will be a summer project inspired from the fairy experiment in hiller’s work.
I’m really excited and can’t wait to work on some more fantastic pieces which I think will become something really great and awarding in my life.
