Sagmeister has a well-established name in the design world. I think the things I have learned in my life so far is interesting because he shows beauty and fun characteristics in design. I think people in general have a certain persona when it comes to design, they think it’s a brutal world, 'clicky', but you have to have passion in design and what you do. In my work emotion is always shown, this is a burden because I think designers have to have a very open mind about every style/genre/look to work with clients. The work of Sagmeister's design interests me because of his huge range of materials, its quiet inspiring knowing that there is no limit, sometime I hold back on my work and think NO it’s a stupid idea, but his work tells me that I should just go for it, so what if people think you’re mad, look at Mondrian, everyone thought his work was mad at first, but I think I should just follow my heart in a lot of my design work, unless obviously your client disagrees with something (in the near future). One of my favourite pieces which is put in the book was definitely the spider web, there’s no way of me trying to justify it, but I think it just looks great, its such a clever idea.
The books interesting because its like his back catalog of his work, its rewarding when you look back at it and see what you’ve achieved in your life. Duchamp’s work on the La Boite-an-Valise is interesting because of the source of reproduction etc… and the what inspired him was seeing his brother die, this must have had such a dramatic effect on him to go on and create this piece or pieces of work. Its almost like our blog, it saves and states what you’ve done, you reflect back to it.
Its all very well getting lost in words and trying to justify everything you do, I do have a lot of meaning in my work, but I think that what this brief really gives you is a reward, obviously a grade is relevant to your life, but something personal to you that you’re sharing with others is a lot more rewarding.
“No other box I choose to use”
On the outer of the box I’ve used black and white. I've been influenced by Mondrian's pieces, (because he was my chosen artist) in most of his work, he had a theory that everything in the universe was based on line and color, he simplified his way of thinking and expressed it through art, he used black and white in his pieces but this is not the reason why i chose these colours, i chose these colours because in "takotsubo cardiomyopathy" our first brief, the colour of my first box was grey. So i've taken the shade of grey and applied a 'Mondrian way of thinking' to it, leaving me with the two shades which make grey which are black and white. I've simplified the colour grey.
On the inner of the lid, it looks as though i've jumbled up random words to create a messy look, the messy look has meaning behind it and the words also have meaning. I went through all of my lecture notes and chose certain words which i think questioned my way of thinking. This is not a series of words but its a mindmap of what i was thinking in the lecture notes, the words that really stood out at me. I wanted to create a dreamy-muddled up feel to the piece because they're representing my thoughts and feelings towards my work, the questions, the answers, the research etc... the words i chose described what i was thinking of.
The human heart is a representation of two things, one which is our first brief, this relates to when I captured a heart attack in a box, again my own personal style is in the brief because it shows that my emotions are mostly amplified which shows in my work. I think without expression, I wouldn’t have anything. The box itself was originally going to be a representation of the box from the original first brief, the box was suppose to be grey but I think by dividing the grey into black and white it shows I’m breaking down my knowledge into simple but effective elements. If I had more time and money the box would be made of stainless steal, almost like my knowledge and work is a heavy burden on me yet strong and powerful.
The book is a connotation of knowledge, unlike the apple, the book is more literal. I’ve covered the outside of it in the same chalk material I used for the carton, again my knowledge from that brief covers the wall of the box book. On the inner of the book I have two people, Henry Tate and ‘boss’ of alfa foods, my pretend two clients. When the book is closed they are pressed together like a fusion, which is shown on the outside of the box.
A mirror can be connotation as anything. But the focus I had for whoever looks at the box. My mind is influenced by everything in the world, but someone who’s interested in my work will look at the box, for example someone who likes my work will see them self’s, I create my work for the pleasure for others. In this case you, my lecturer will look into the mirror, your mind has influenced my mind, this is not just MY work but it’s actually your work and other artists work as well. There’s no such thing as originality, I am influenced, I am not original. It also came to my attention that this is also a clever idea because it shows the mirror image, the reflection of my work, the other world of design. It creates a feeling of mystery, so much more to learn, so many mistakes. A mirror image say’s a lot and I think its perfect for this piece. To make the idea obvious, i've attached the mirror onto a canvas representing my blank canvas like mind, and the influence you have on my work, from looking at my past lecture notes i accidently got inspired by an abnormal thought i wrote down whilst looking into Mondrians work
"HUMAN-VAMPIRE
HUMAN-ARTIST GENIUS "
"From what i've read so far, this gentlemen seem to have a hell of an emotional ride to becoming what he is. Also must like jumping from the norm to the abstract by meditation also becoming a 'hippie' in appearance and thought during his journey to becoming a genius, which i personally think all good artists go through, almost like a transition of human to vampire."
I thought this quote would look brilliant on the canvas as its my own, to give a further indication as to why i put the mirror their and what i'm aspiring to become. Its so relevant because I'm yearning to get to this transaction, it show's that i'm young in life and still learning, in someways this quote is immature however the way i've complimented the 'artist genius' with the 'vampire' i think i was trying to say is that design and art are timeless youthful and beautiful.
For the wrapping project, from looking at my notes i think it was a project in which i researched a lot more than the others as it was a difficult brief for me to understand, yet the best possible outcome i can use for the final, is in photograph form and then placed into the box in which i used to wrap the very first item of the project, this shows the contrast between the begining of the piece and the end result of the piece. We have a plain A4 box with a little decoration of photography connotations to give you an idea of what’s inside the box, then an abstract photograph inside. I think the contrast works really well. My original idea was to put all my lecture notes inside this box, but then i feared it might over take the rest of the pieces within the box, i didn't want it to be a main focus point because all briefs were as valuable as each other. Also on the inside of the photo box I have a brief biography, my name, my date of birth, a photograph and some of my occupations, as I’m a new artist I think its necessary to put these things in there, its briefly introducing myself for clients. The other photograph in the box is the inspiration from Susan Hillers exhibition for my sleep project I’ve been working on, still very incomplete but I’m monitering my sleep and dreams once a week, because this module has opened my eyes to my imagination I have wrote my imagination underneath piece, I think this is matches the work because it shows I have a vivid imagination.
The string theory inside the box relates to the elements in what the universe is built up on, it’s only a theory but it relates to the work because it shows everything in life and how we came to being. It represents the human form and the universe, how I think and how I came to being, using the string in literal terms and presenting string in the box. String can represent lifelines and many other things, but it also represents packaging, joining everything together in the module, wrapping the module up inside the box with string. The only reason why I cut the string and tied it around each piece is because they’re separate briefs, but by using the string and not editing the color or material, it shows its still my own thought and no one else’s. The use of the string theory was only used because of its name and how I could use it in literal terms, I could have gone down the Newton’s theory, but putting an apple in my box would have de-composed and my attempt at making an apple out of paper Mache was unsuccessful, even though I did think it would have been quiet a quirky idea as the apple has been abused in representations and connotations over and over again.
There’s one thing I don’t like about the box and that is the fact that I can’t put all of my work in there. There’s a note in the box with my blog address on it an through this the viewer has a wider range of my work however, I do want to create something like this again in my own style, for job interviews, art gallery submissions etc… Its going to cost me a lot of money, because the next time round I’ll have my box personally made. I look in the box and I’m really pleased with the outcome I’m not an electronic wiz kid hence why I haven’t put electronic media within the box, I wanted to keep it to photographs, sculpture, paper and writing materials, just because they’re the most common materials I’ve use. If I wanted to forward this project I would consider many more ways of presenting different media’s e.g if I handed in the digital design work I achieved then I would have maybe put it on a memory stick or made a video of how I used the computer based program. I did want to put in a video of how I made all of the objects and put in a review about my work, yet annoyingly my web cam broke and the video on my phone only records 30seconds each time. I didn’t think it was necessary for me to put in lights and technology because I haven’t actually used any computer based design programs, but again in the future with more time and money I will create a piece like this piece and use more media’s. I used as fewer objects as I could in the box because of one of the key modernism rules, I didn’t think it was necessary to put in more work than needed as there was only 3 main briefs again I want to continue with the project over the summer and make a whole museum of my work.
This module has confused the hell out of me, but I feel positive about my learning, its opened my eye’s to the commercial side of design, mass production in the cravendale packaging. The mass production of wrapping items, I did go down an alternative route of wrapping, but I also watched programs like ‘how its made’ which show you the mass production of wrapping items, how items are made mechanically etc…
My downfall in design is that my design is all expressional, and this is why it’s been difficult to acknowledge the branding and packaging, its slightly commercialized my work. My imagination has expanded in this module and that’s what I really love. I feel satisfied with the amount of research I’ve done and experiences I’ve had throughout the module. My downfall in design is that my design is all expressional, and this is why it’s been difficult to acknowledge the branding and packaging, its slightly commercialized my work. My imagination has expanded in this module and that’s what I really love. I feel a lot more confident now about my work because of the likes of Duchamp and Mondrian I have a lot of views and opinions which I’d love to express through work, I was never a fine artist, even in college I was creating design work thinking that it was art and being told my art wasn’t art was really negative for me but these artists have give me confidence, like the but on a more business term this module has give me a lot of opportunity’s in working for a company or a business, its give me a clearer idea of visual communication and what our society consumes. Again this module has really boosted my confidence.
