The future isn't bright

The future is bright or is it?                                                                 Thomas Bedward

The internet is such a casual tool of everyday life now in our modern society, with the internet we can learn and experience in the click of a button rather then learning about, for example, different cultures; rather than having to go to china to learn about their culture or having to walk to the library and look through countless amount of books to find out a specific subject, with a typical search engine such as Google we can get straight to the point. Technology keeps moving closer and larger to the nirvana of our lives which is an extreme simplistic way of living. I don’t think that its possible to predict something which will happen in the future with technology because we’re always trying to look at another break through, another necessary thing to make our lives easier and easier each day, but I can certainly focus on one very strong subject which I’m obsessed with, but also loath it, the true Jekyll and Hyde of nearly everyone’s lives, social networking. Social network groups have possessed the nation over the past 20 years, but I want to go a bit deeper than just look at the norm of facebook.
I want to create a piece about our cyber culture.
People have been killed; relationships have been destroyed, Cyber bulling resulting in suicide which 99% of our society is completely wrapped into. We're not looking at feelings because we can't see, touch, FEEL other peoples emotions whilst we're doing these incredibly stupid things online. I myself have been wrapped into this awful culture of cyber bulling being both victim and predator  and have had relationships destroyed over it so it really makes it a deep project for me however i think that a lot of people are going to relate to this subject.
It makes me want to delete my blogs, my facebook profile and every source of social networking, but again I’m a huge victim of this, once I’ve deleted it then it means loosing contact, it looses all the pro's of the social networking.
Another subject on the internet which is quiet disturbing is sexual relationships between the internet and people. Obviously people profiling themselves on the internet not just on facebook but on sexual sites, for people too meet up with someone who they’ve never met in person before to have sex, or even the lighter relationship sites which aren’t for sex but for relationships, things such as ‘match.com’ it’s like a computer is controlling the way of love. Is a computer matching up best matches. Its like machines are controlling our emotions. Which leads to the matrix theory, will we become robots ourselves? If a computer is controlling our lust for someone then has anyone thought its not real emotions, you just think you’ll be a good match with someone because a computer is telling you you’ll be a good match with someone. Its very bizarre that people haven’t really thought about these things before, or maybe they have I haven’t done enough research yet to get an end result, these are just questions I’m asking myself. I really don’t know what the end result of all of this is going to be. In 5 years time, will human kind even bother going to look for the love of their life, or will they let a computer do all the work for you.

For this assignment I had two idea’s the first to be a collage of the newspaper articles of the victims from facebook murders, suicides and the other to create an Roy Lichtenstein version of facebook for example

Instead of “oh Jeff I love you too, but…” I’d put “oh Jeff I love you too, until I saw your facebook status”

After a lot on thought I made the choice of sticking to the Jamie Reid styled Facebook posters, because I think this causes a more dramatic effect I could also use Pollock’s paint splats over the top to create an un-easy feeling, a representation of blood.

See if I use red splats it could cause a dramatic effect

In Reid’s work he uses it against the Royal family I can cause the same effect as anti-facebook.
I did consider going to the library but due to lack of time I wasn’t able, I found the articles online which I think compliments the piece because I found the articles on the research again relating to the future.

My final outcome looks really shocking, almost like out of a horror movie, but this is what I wanted to cause, I wanted to create something that said “the future is not bright” stop whilst there’s still hope. I wanted people to look at the piece and think… No this is wrong, look at all the lives lost already. Using the artist inspirations I’ve come up with the perfect solution I’m really pleased with the outcome.
